Focus and Scope

The Utrecht Law Review is an open access, peer-reviewed journal which aims to offer an international academic platform for cross-border legal research. In the first place, this concerns research in which the boundaries of the classic branches of the law (private law, criminal law, constitutional and administrative law, European and public international law) are crossed and connections are made between these areas of the law, amongst others from a comparative law perspective. In addition, the journal welcomes research in which classic law is brought face to face with not strictly legal disciplines such as philosophy, economics, political sciences and public administration science. Please contact the managing editor if you are not sure whether your research falls into these categories.

The Utrecht Law Review was established in 2005 and is affiliated to the Utrecht University School of Law. The editorial board consists of renowned and young researchers, representing the various disciplines at the School of Law, and two student members. Academic quality and the international character of the journal are guaranteed by the scientific council, which consists of national and foreign experts in all branches of legal science. All academic articles that are submitted are subjected to anonymous peer review.

Publication Frequency

At the start of each year, a general issue appears including contributions on a variety of (legal) topics. In June, a special issue appears on a specific theme which is based on one of the research programmes at the Utrecht School of Law. In addition to these two annual issues, we may publish incidental special issues.

Academic articles for the general issue must be submitted before 30 June.
Student Papers for the general issue must be submitted before 30 June.
Articles for special issues can only be submitted on invitation by the editors.

Open Access Policy

Utrecht Law Review provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.

Authors of articles published in the Utrecht Law Review remain the copyright holders and grant third parties the right to use, reproduce, and share the article according to the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported license agreement.

Archiving Policy

To ensure permanency of all publications, Utrecht Law Review utilises LOCKSS archiving systems to create permanent archives for the purposes of preservation and restoration.

In February 2016 Utrecht Law Review was accepted for coverage in the Clarivate Emerging Journals Citation Index
